The Traces (2023-) begins with the rediscovery of a forgotten composer’s scores, which lay in the attic of a manor house in a small town for almost a century. A chance encounter brings these materials to light, prompting his grandchildren to open their family archives and piece together a life scattered across objects, recollections and time. The house becomes an archive in itself: cupboards, corners and attic spaces hold fragments of the composer’s history alongside traces of later inhabitants. Photographs follow these overlapping stories through details and associations, leaving room for gaps, uncertain chronology and memories that resist a single account. There is no single memory: each remembers different things, and remembers them differently, making the reconstruction as much an act of imagination as one of discovery. Through this family story, the project explores how the past shapes our identities and how we continually recreate it through remembering. The project has been exhibited at Wawel Royal Castle, the Kraków Philharmonic and Wilanów Palace.
